That ‘70s Style: 5 Far Out Outfits With Throwback Flair

We can always count on the ‘70s to serve as style inspiration. Flared jeans? Shimmering disco blouses? Platform heels? Yes, yes, and yes, please! For late summer and fall, the groovy decade did more than stimulate a few key trends. In fact, it prominently influenced much of the season to include ribbed knits, belled bottoms and bohemian blouses galore. As a follow-up to summer sets, slick suiting abounds, too as does a smattering of retro-style accessories from oversized wireframes to textured handbags and snake-skin boots. When the temperature starts to (mercifully) dip, utilitarian-inspired toppers, handicraft knits, and shearling coats will be chief. We can dig it.

Here’s the thing. Seventies style is fun and all, but you hardly want your outfit to appear as though you time warped your way to the present. Instead, you want to modernize the effect whether you’re going for a flower child-inspired daytime look or disco-chic after hours. And since we still have plenty of summer left, we know you want to start rocking the trend well before the new season begins (besides, your favorite warm-weather pieces are likely starting to feel tired at this point in the season).

Here, five ‘70s-inspired outfits to wear now and into fall. Each one is decidedly fresh and totally dy-no-mite!

Casually Rad

SHOP: (clockwise from top left) One Eleven Ribbed Crew Neck Crop Top, Low Heel Slide Mules, Super High Waisted Denim Perfect Bell Flare, Large Metal Hoop Earrings, Foldover Saddle Cross-body Bag

A ribbed-knit top and flare jeans channel a casual ‘70s vibe to a T. Keep the look polished with nude mules, a suede saddle bag, and large hoop earrings.

Bohemian Boogie

SHOP: (clockwise from top left) Cut-out Handle Shoulder Bag, Surplice Bell Sleeve Romper, Snakeskin Thin Heel Booties, Hammered Drop Earrings

For an evening at the disco (okay, a girls night out) a bohemian-style romper is a funky-fresh alternative to the LBD. Snakeskin accessories are a glamorous touch while sleek statement earrings give the look a modern edge.

Fresh Flower Child

SHOP: (clockwise from top left) Polka Dot Button Front Tie Sleeve Peplum Top, Dolce Vita Dane Wedges, Low-rise Ivory Frayed-hem Denim Shortie, Hexagon Lens Sunglasses, Moda Luxe Dhalia Cross-body Bag

For a retro revival off duty, we’re sweet on a vintage-style blouse and frayed cut-offs. Oversize sunnies, a fringed cross-body bag, and platform espadrilles are up-to-date extras that capture a hippie spirit.

Way-Out for Work

SHOP: (clockwise from top left) Double Zip Cross-body Bag, Rolled Sleeve Boyfriend Blazer, Super High-Waisted Soft Twill Flare Pant, Textured-Dot Zip Front Tank, Small Hoop Earrings, Thick Heeled Sandals

Throw it back to the ‘70s at work with a slick suit in a vibrant shade. Avoid a costume situation and temper flared trousers with elegant earrings, neutral heels and a pared-back bag (black leather is always a chic-and-poised).

Sophisticated Á La Stevie

SHOP: (clockwise from top left) Cascading Sleeve Surplice Blouse, Metal Link Linear Earrings, Half Moon Chain Strap Cross-Body Bag, Mid Rise Five-Pocket Stretch Legging Jeans, Dolce Vita Obie Heels.

What would the ‘70s have been without Stevie Nicks? Emulate her freethinker spirit with cascading sleeves (her signature look) and style with cropped skinny jeans for an updated effect. Continue driving the look into contemporary territory by adding snakeskin mules, a suede smooth saddle bag, and two-tone earrings into the mix.
