Ever wonder what the embodiment of South Florida chic is? Well, look no further than fashion blogger Stephanie Hill’s pink-toned Instagram feed. Come for her feminine, sexy-yet-elegant sense of style and perfectly coiffed lob. Stay for the gorgeous views of lush palm trees, clear blue pools, and dusty peach architecture. At 19, Hill moved to West Palm Beach to become a ballerina and later attend college. After graduating, she worked in public relations and launched her blog, The Style Bungalow, in 2014. Today she has more than 123k Instagram followers and a dedicated readership that adores her endless tropical imagery, travel stories and strong sense of personal style. We’re also pretty wild about her ability to put together a look, so we asked her to pick a few of her favorite leg-lengthening, high-waisted pieces from Express and take them for a joy-ride around her sun-drenched block. Below, she shares her styling tips so that you can recreate the looks (or put your own spin on them) at home.
Hello! Stephanie here from The Style Bungalow sharing some of my style tips for wearing high-waisted pants like paper bag shorts and jeans from Express.
Look 1: Super casual
Being petite (under 5’4), I do everything in my power to appear taller so I wear a lot of high-waisted bottoms (i.e. that sit above my belly button). My favorite styles are skinny and straight jeans. I love how they hug the leg to create the illusion of longer legs and how easy they are to style (duh, jeans) with a basic tank top. They’re also super easy to hem (or if you’re like me, roll up at the bottom) and look cute with fun sandals.
I’m wearing high-waisted distressed original vintage skinny ankle jeans (in light denim) with an Express One Eleven ribbed high neck tank.
Look 2: Laid back but cute
When wearing high-waisted skirts, I almost always wear a fitted top or tuck it in. A crop top works too. The key is to balance the looseness of the skirt with a tighter top. Not only does it show off your waistline but it emphasizes the pattern on the skirt.
Just wiggle up the waist line to hit right below your belly button (as shown). Wear flats if you’re tall or want to be casual; sandals or heels if you want #legsfordays.
I’m wearing a striped linen-blend sash waist pencil skirt paired with another Express One Eleven fitted ribbed v-neck tank and a cropped denim jacket!
Look 3: Dressy
When going out in Florida, it’s not uncommon to wear dressy shorts to dinner. The key is to make them look sophisticated, so for this look, I opted for black paper-bag shorts and an elegant top. The monochromatic look feels elevated and the heels balance out the volume (slash make me look tall!).
Trust me when I say this, high-waisted pieces can be incredibly flattering (hello, legs for days) when worn the right way. It’s taken me years of experience dancing ballet professionally (where our main objective was to trick the audience into thinking we were 6ft. tall on stage) and when styling outfits for my blog to recognize how important clothing proportions are.
I’m wearing the solid puff sleeve cotton raglan top in pitch black with high waisted side tie linen-blend shorts!
If you’re still unsure, I suggest buying a few pieces to experiment with and then taking pictures of yourself in different combinations to find which one works for you!
